SHORT BIOGRAPHY Dr. Simonsen holds a Ph.D. in Recreation and Leisure Studies; a MA in Therapeutic Recreation; a MA in Legal and Ethical Studies; a BA in English Literature, and Paralegal Certificate. She has been the President of the National Therapeutic Recreation Society and on the Boards of several organizations. She also served for six years on the Board of Trustees of the National Recreation and Park Association and for three years on the Board of Directors of Camp Mark Seven. She likes to run, swim, bike and go to school. She participates in the occasional race, triathlon, and/or swim meet. Teaching: Therapeutic Recreation courses, Law and Liability in Recreation, Administration and Supervision in Recreation, Leisure in Later Life, Leisure Education. Grants/Awards: Received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Therapeutic Recreation Society; several Presidential Awards from NTRS and ATRA; Distinguished Fellow Award from the Maryland Recreation Parks Association; Maryland Governor's Citation for Service; and other service recognition awards from various organizations. Service: She has served on a variety of committees in national organizations and at Gallaudet University - sometimes as chair. Scholarly Activity: She has written a chapter in a book related to testing of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing; published articles in Parks and Recreation, and edited documents related to licensure and certification in Therapeutic Recreation. The main topics on which Dr. Simonsen is asked to present include: The Future of Therapeutic Recreation; Professional Pride and Ethics; On Becoming a Therapeutic Recreation Professional; Managing Conflict with CLASS; State Licensure and Certification in Therapeutic Recreation; Deafness and Deaf Culture; Ethics and Leadership and Management.

LICENSURE Dr. Simonsen is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and a Certified Park and Recreation Professional She is a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association, the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association, the American Therapeutic Recreation Association, and the American Academy of Park and Recreation Administration
