Students have the opportunity to complete prerequisites for certification in teaching physical education at the K-12 school level. Preparing to become a Physcial Education teacher requires two components. 1. Students must acquire content knowledge and develop skills specific to the methodology of teaching Physcial Education. This is offered in the Physcial Education teaching emphasis major. 2. Students must also acquire knowledge and develop skills necessary to pursue and achieve teaching certification. This is offered through the Department of Education a major in Education with a specialization in Secondary Education (K-12 Physical Education/Teacher Education). Students who want to prepare for teacher certification must apply for admission to the Teacher Preparation Program and take a combination of courses from the physical education major plus courses in psychology, human development, instructional development, teaching methods, curricula, and a supervised field practicum teaching experience. The physical education degree program at Gallaudet is specifically designed to prepare students for teaching on the secondary (K-12) school level. Additionally students may pursue the unique opportunity to be trained in adventure-based programming which focuses on challenge activities to provide students with elevated levels of self-confidence, trust, and self-esteem.
MissionThe mission of the undergraduate major in physical education with an emphasis in teaching is to foster the physical education teacher candidates' acquisition of professional content knowledge and skills necessary to progress toward being qualified to meet teacher certification requirements. K-12 Teaching SpecializationThe physical education major is specifically designed to prepare you for teaching physical education on the secondary-school (K-12) level. If you're interested in physical education but aren't necessarily planning on teaching physical education, you're still encouraged to pursue this major. You'll also have the unique opportunity to be trained in adventure-based programming which focuses on challenge activities that boost self-confidence, trust, and self-esteem. If you're interested in teaching physical education in K-12 schools, you'll need to apply to the Teacher Preparation Program, and take an additional 31 credit hours in the teacher education program offered through the Education Department.
