The Department of Physical Education and Recreation offers a major in physical education, which prepares graduates for teaching and leading physical education activities in many settings, as well as other careers in sports and athletics. The Physical Education major program offers curriculum of study with two areas of emphasis. Students may choose a Physical Education major with an emphasis in Physical Education Teaching or an emphasis in Personal Training.
Teaching
Students have the opportunity to complete prerequisites for certification in teaching physical education and wellness at either or both elementary and secondary (K-12) school levels. The Physical Education Teaching emphasis is designed to prepare students to lead physical activities and to pursue professional teacher preparation coursework and state teacher certification requirements. The emphasis in Physical Education Teaching is accredited by the National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education/National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NCATE/ NASPE).
Personal Training
Alternatively, students may choose a Physical Education major with an emphasis in Personal Training. A personal training career entails planning and leading strength and exercise programs in the health and fitness industry.
