Students have the opportunity to complete prerequisites for certification in teaching physical education at the K-12 school level. Preparing to become a Physical Education teacher requires two components:
1. Students must acquire content knowledge and develop skills specific to the methodology of teaching Physical Education. This is offered in the Physical Education Teaching emphasis major.
2. Students must also acquire knowledge and develop skills necessary to pursue and achieve teaching certification. This is offered through the Gallaudet Undergraduate Teacher Education program for a major in Education with a Specialization in Secondary Education (K-12 Physical Education/Teacher Education); or by enrolling in another accredited undergraduate or graduate program.
Students who want to prepare for teacher certification must apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program and take a combination of courses from the physical education major plus courses in psychology, human development, instructional development, teaching methods, curricula, and a supervised field practicum teaching experience. The physical education degree program at Gallaudet is specifically designed to prepare students for teaching on the K-12 school level.
Mission
The mission of the undergraduate major in physical education with an emphasis in teaching is to foster the physical education teacher candidates' acquisition of professional content knowledge and skills necessary to progress toward being qualified to meet teacher certification requirements.
K-12 Teaching Specialization
The physical education major is specifically designed to prepare you for teaching physical education on the K-12 level. If you are interested in physical education but are not necessarily planning on teaching physical education, you are still encouraged to pursue this major. The Physical Education Major with an Emphasis in Teaching will also help you to prepare to lead physical education activities in environments other than schools, to be an intramural or sports activity director, to coach, or be an athletic director. You will also have the unique opportunity to be trained in adventure-based programming which focuses on challenge activities that foster self-confidence, trust, group problem solving, and self-esteem.
If you are interested in teaching physical education in K-12 schools, you will need to apply to the Teacher Education Program and take an additional 34 credit hours in the teacher education program offered through the Gallaudet Undergraduate Education Department.
