Outcomes
The Department of Physical Education and Recreation plays an important role in helping students meet the five major competencies of :
- Language and Communication
- Critical Thinking
- Identity and Culture
- Knowledge and Inquiry
- Ethics and Social Responsibility

In addition, the department has established its own set of major-specific outcomes for each of its programs.

Physical Education teachers identify and demonstrate physcial education content and disciplinary concepts related to the development of a physically educated person.
- Physical Education teachers understand how individuals learn and develop and can provide opportunities that support their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
- Physical Education teachers use an understanding of individual and group motivitation and behavior to create a safe learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation.
- Physical Education teachers use effective verbal, nonverbal and media communication techniques to enhance learning and engagement in physical activity settings.
- Physical Education teachers plan and implement a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional strategies to develop physically educated individuals, based on state and national (NASPE K-12) standards.
- Physical Education teachers use assessment to foster physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of students in physical activity.
- Physical Education teachers use information technology to enhance personal and professional productivity.
Careers
Students who have received degrees are:
- Teaching Physical Education in the public school system at an Elementary School
- Teaching Physical Education in the public school system at a Middle School
- Teaching Physical Education (ranging from K - 12th grades) in residential schools for the deaf
- Teaching Adapted Physcial Education in a public school
Physical Education majors have gotten jobs in the areas of:
- Elementary PE teachers, middle and secondary school teachers, teacher's aides
- Fitness leaders in school and corporate environments
- Activity leaders in school, residential school, community recreation and camp environments, and as coaches, and sports officials
